9 Best Nespresso Machines in 2021

Best Nespresso Machines UK

So you finally decided to get yourself one of the best Nespresso machines in the UK but there are so many to choose from. I completely understand, there are some pretty amazing Nespresso machines and most of them provide almost the same functions with minor differences. As it is with any other product, it is always good to do your proper research before getting an expensive machine. While the Nespresso machines are not that expensive, there is still a sizable investment especially when it comes to getting your daily cup of coffee.

The History of Nespresso Machines

But before we start talking about the best Nespresso machines, it is very important that we discuss where they come from. This will play a major part in your selection process and inform you how and why Nespresso machines are what they are. They are a relatively modern invention coming into being in the 1970s. Fun fact, the guy who made this, Eric Favre had a packaging job in Nestlé. He did that only because he wanted to pitch his idea to the company. There are several reasons why you choose a Nespresso machine or any other espresso or coffee maker and some of them are:

Ease of Usage – The machines are superbly quick. They only take a few seconds to heat up and start making your daily coffee. If you’re someone like me that is sometimes impatient when it comes to their morning cup, the Nespresso machine is one of the best choices available.

Affordability – When you compare the Nespresso machines with other automatic or semi-automatic espresso machines, the price is very reasonable. This is exactly why they are so popular around the globe, affordability matters a lot when it comes to purchasing appliances.

Variety – There are just a lot of pods available for Nespresso machines and this means you are never out of choice. If you want to try something new, you’ll have the option to do so. With not a lot of restrictions and easy availability, leading espresso machines are a fan favourite. You’d be able to get yourself Nespresso compatible capsules easily across the UK, some outlets are even offering delivery to your doorstep, so you don’t even need to go out to get them.

They Produce Nespresso Not Espresso

If you’re looking for an espresso machine, a true espresso machine, these are not the ones you’re looking for. That’s right, the Nespresso original machines are basically coffee machines that make espresso-style coffee, but it is not actually espresso. Allow me to elaborate.

The creator of Nespresso machines, Eric Favre, didn’t simply reinvent the wheel when it comes to espresso machines, he began from the start. His aim was to make a machine that allows customers to easily make espresso in their own homes without the need of any coffee grinders. While he started out to make one thing but ended up with a capsule-based coffee machine. This is not to say that the coffee produced by Nespresso machines is not great, quite the contrary, but it is still not true espresso.

The main differences between an espresso machine and a Nespresso machine are very minute, but they are still there. A Nespresso machine extracts coffee at higher pressure and water flows through the coffee a bit faster. There is more water than coffee in the ratio that makes it a bit weaker than actual espresso. Generally speaking, it also results in a bit of a cooler beverage at the end, it’s not going to be freezing, and you’ll probably not even notice it, but it is something that is scientifically proven.

So does this mean that Nespresso machines are not great? Absolutely not, they are perfectly fine machines that produce tasty and rich coffee. In all honesty, some people do not like the strong taste of coffee and prefer the milder Nespresso version and this is exactly why the machines are so popular across the globe.

Don’t worry, if you are in the market for a true espresso experience, we have a Best Espresso Machines list, the Best Bean-to-Cup Espresso Machines list, and even the Cheapest Espresso Machines list for you to look through.

What Is the Difference between the Nespresso Machines?

Generally speaking there are 2 types of Nespresso machines, there are the original Nespresso machines and the Virtuo machines.

The biggest difference between the two is their method of extraction. The new Vertuo machines use centrifugal force to infuse coffee. It is a great concept and works really well in making coffees. Another difference is that the original machines produce only 110 mL of coffee, so that is a bit lower than the average-sized mug in the UK which is around 250 to 300 mL.

So if you want big cups of coffee, the Nespresso Vertuo is for you.

However, there are a couple of methods you can use to get larger cups of coffee on your original Nespresso machine as well. You can simply use two pods or three double-shot pods to make a bigger cup of coffee, but it is going to be a bit of a hassle. Also, it is not exactly environmentally friendly if you are not using recyclable pods, so I highly recommend that you go with the recyclable ones and recycle them after you’re done.

Speaking of Vertuo pods, they come with some fancy new features which include a barcode on them. This allows the machines to immediately identify what kind of part you’re using and how much water used to deliver great quality coffee to the user. It all depends on the ground coffee that is placed inside the pod, so you’ll be able to get a lot of different options when selecting the drink.

The Vertuo machines are convenient options if you are into drinking a lot of coffee. Personally, I’d go for the Vertuo machines simply because of the ease-of-use they provide and because they are a bit newer technology. However, not everyone has the budget to spring for the latest and greatest Vertuo machine, and for those the original machine will work absolutely fine.

Speaking of budgets, we have to also consider the price of the pods here. The new Vertuo pods are generally expensive than the original ones. Depending on your place of residency, finding the Vertuo pods can be a bit of a hassle as well as they are not as popular as the original ones.

The original pods are around £0.35 and there are a lot of options available there. You can either spring for the espresso genuine pods or even get a bigger discount on some third-party ones if you shop around. Usually, I’m consistently able to get compatible pods for a fraction of the original price, and they work perfectly fine and make excellent coffee.

Speaking of third-party pods, they are virtually non-existent for the Vertuo machines. As the technology is relatively new and has been around for a couple of years I don’t think we’ll see pods by other companies on it. The barcodes are a double-edged sword and I reckon they don’t want us to use third-party pods on their machines any more, which I completely understand from a business perspective but as a consumer, it is a bit of a bummer for us. Having a lot of options is always great and competition makes everything better for the consumers.

Another big point to consider is that if you have already used the Nespresso original machines and are a fan of them, the Vertuo machines may have a slightly different taste because they are completely different technologies. I recommend that you try out coffee made by a Vertuo machine before committing to that. When it comes to choice, the original Nespresso has a lot more devices available on the market, and they are proven to be great.

I’ll be covering both of these machines in this article, and first, go with the original ones and then move on to the Vertuo machines. As there are not a lot of great Nespresso Vertuo machines out there, I’m placing them at the end of the list.

The unit we are listing on the best Nespresso machines in the UK is made by Magimix. There is another version made by Krups which I didn’t get to test, so it’s not on the list, but there are some minor differences between both the models. The Nespresso 11315 Citiz Coffee Machine is an incredibly sleek-looking device with a glossy exterior and some chrome peppered around to give it a luxurious look. The first thing you notice about the machine is how slim it is, with its smaller footprint it is amazing for kitchens that are a bit smaller.

One of the best things about the Nespresso 11315 Citiz Coffee Machine is the ability to fold up the cup shelf and remove the drip tray. This gives you extra space to accommodate bigger mugs and cups. I know, it is not a groundbreaking feature but for someone who loves large cups of coffee, this is a very considerate move by the company. Even though it is small, it comes with a 1 L water tank at the back. I also like how the bin is capable of holding 12 used capsules before you need to empty it. Design-wise, Nespresso 11315 Citiz Coffee Machine is one of the best-looking machines around. It is also very easy to clean and maintain.

The Nespresso 11315 Citiz Coffee Machine is fully compatible with any classic Nespresso pods. The pods are available online and in-store, but the machine really shines because it allows you to use 3rd party capsules. Just make sure they have “Nespresso compatible” on them. This is not Vertuo compatible so make sure you get the original pods. Speaking of drinks, it makes 2 different sizes of black coffee which are espresso of 40 ml and lungo that is 110 mL. It is also incredibly fast when it comes to the heat-up time, taking only 25 seconds to get there. The user interface is also straightforward with simple one-touch buttons, so you can get your morning coffee incredibly fast.

One downside of the Nespresso machine is that there are no options for hot milk or frothing. But this is to be expected, it is after all a basic original Nespresso machine and most of them don’t come with a milk frother. There is an additional accessory you can purchase that allows you to manually add milk to your lungo or espresso. If you’re looking for a good quality Nespresso machine that delivers great taste consistently, the Nespresso 11315 Citiz Coffee Machine is going to please you. It is a bit on the pricier side especially considering it doesn’t come with a milk frother, but the quality of coffee it produces more than makes up for the price.

Reasons to Buy

  • It is very well built with premium materials
  • Small size so easy to place anywhere
  • The user interface is simplified

Reasons to Shun

  • Has only two drink sizes
  • No milk frothing option

Key Features

  • Wattage:  1600 Watts
  • Dimensions:  32 x 14 x 41 cm
  • Material: Stainless Steel
  • Interface:  Buttons
  • Water Tank: 1.5 Litres

If you are in the market for the best of the best and money is no objection then the Nespresso BNE800 Creatista Sage is one of the best Nespresso machines you should be looking at. Normally it makes coffee just like any other Nespresso machine but also expands on the capabilities by adding an automated steam wand into the mix. This allows you to easily froth milk for your drinks. The machine is very well-designed and one would hope that it is considering its high price. It is made out of premium materials and looks stylish and sturdy. I don’t think you’d be disappointed by the design of this beautiful machine.

I found that the user interface and digital menu are easy to use and understand. The buttons are all clearly labelled, and you won’t have any trouble while using the Nespresso BNE800 Creatista Sage. I also like that the machine includes a dedicated steam wand which is a staple on other espresso machines but not usually seen on Nespresso ones. You don’t need to be a trained barista to use this machine and this is one of the biggest pluses. I also loved how the steam wand automatically self purges after finishing the drink, so it stays hygienic and bacteria-free. The machine automatically selects the temperature of the milk as well as the quantity of the froth on the drink. Don’t worry, you’d be able to customize the temperature of the milk, the texturing of the foam, and even the amount of espresso.

The Nespresso BNE800 Creatista Sage also offers a height adjustment of the cup stand. This is a very important factor for me personally because I like huge cups of coffee and if a machine is not able to accommodate them then it’s just not for me. I reckon a lot of people love big mugs of steaming coffee and this feature would surely please them.

As with any other product, the Nespresso BNE800 Creatista Sage is not entirely perfect. Although it does come a lot closer. The temperature of the espresso I got with this machine was a tad bit cooler, when you’re paying this high of a price, you expect perfection from the device. It is not completely unusable, far from it, but I would’ve loved it if it was just a bit hotter. Thankfully, the device only takes up an astonishing 3 seconds to heat up, so you’ll be getting your morning coffee in a jiffy.

Reasons to Buy

  • A stunningly beautiful design
  • Premium build with stainless steel
  • Comes with a steam wand
  • Heats up in only 3 seconds

Reasons to Shun

  • Espresso needs to be hotter
  • Price can be an issue for some

Key Features

  • Wattage:  1200 Watts
  • Dimensions:  33 x 8.4 x 20.4 cm
  • Material: Stainless Steel and Plastic
  • Interface: Buttons
  • Water Tank: 0.6 Litre

In the market for a budget-friendly Nespresso machine? Well take a look at the Nespresso by Krups Essenza Mini and I’m sure you’ll be impressed by its quality and price. The first thing you notice about the Nespresso by Krups Essenza Mini is its design, it is a very compact device with a suitably smaller footprint. Even if you have a very small kitchen, the Nespresso by Krups Essenza Mini will be able to make its place on your countertop. It looks more like an Xbox console than a coffee machine thanks to its rectangular look. Place it horizontally and people may mistake it for Blu-ray player, it is that slim. The device is available in three different colours, and we got to test out the grey one which looked fantastic over a wooden counter.

The Nespresso by Krups Essenza Mini has two programmable options for lungo and espresso. Both of them come with an automatic flow stopping feature and are very easy to use. The heating-up time is around 30 seconds which is great for a quick cup of coffee. The device also comes with some energy-saving features that autostart after three minutes and has an automatic functionality after 9 minutes of inactivity. The Nespresso machine is inexpensive, small, and very simple to use making it one of the best Nespresso machines in the UK.

A point to be noted here is that the Nespresso Essenza Mini is either made by Krups as we have stated in this listing but is also made by Magimix. It may seem like two different machines made by two different companies but in reality, the internals are exactly the same only the design is different. There is only one problem with the Nespresso by Krups Essenza Mini, and it is the cup height, it is not exactly stellar. You won’t be able to fit in an extra-tall mug at all so if you want a big cup of coffee, there are other machines for you. Now that we are speaking about the cons, the capsule bin is a bit smaller too, would’ve loved to have more room in there.

Reasons to Buy

  • Inexpensive and price
  • Compact and small in size
  • A simple and easy to use machine
  • Two programmable options

Reasons to Shun

  • The cup height is not big enough

Key Features

  • Wattage:  1400 Watts
  • Dimensions:  17 x 32 x 25.8 cm
  • Material: Plastic
  • Interface: Touch Buttons
  • Water Tank: 0.9 Litre

The De’Longhi EN560.B Lattissima Touch is one of the best machines if you love lattes, cappuccinos, and latte macchiatos. Thanks to its integrated milk steaming wand, it is able to froth your drinks with incredible accuracy. All you need to do is select how frothy you want your milk to be and the rest is done by the machine itself. It also adds to the experience that you just need to press one button. Speaking of buttons, they are quite sensitive and as with any touch-based interface, are prone to accidental activation, so you may want to be a bit careful.

The De’Longhi EN560.B Lattissima offers six different beverage options to choose from, each with its dedicated button. With the press of a button, you can easily get your favourite coffee drink. From lattes to cappuccinos and from espressos to ristretto, you’ll be able to get your favourite drink in absolutely no time. There are personalized drink options that store how much milk and coffee is required for your favourite drink as well so after initial set up you’ll be ready to roll.

Speaking of the design, the De’Longhi EN560.B Lattissima is a simple yet elegant-looking design. It is not a small machine, so there are several advantages of that, namely the water tank capacity is 1 L. The device also has a lot of clearance for bigger mugs and cups. All you need to do is regular maintenance and cleaning and this will last you a very long time.

Reasons to Buy

  • Get milk-based drinks with one-touch
  • Compatible with larger mugs
  • Comes with a milk frother

Reasons to Shun

  • The milk-based drinks are a tad bit cooler
  • Regular maintenance can become cumbersome

Key Features

  • Wattage:  1350 Watts
  • Dimensions:  44 x 33 x 20 cm
  • Material: Stainless Steel and plastic
  • Interface: Buttons
  • Water Tank: 1.4 Litre

The L’OR Lucente Pro is not made for home usage but rather small businesses and cafés. Maybe your office serves up to 25 cups a day, then this Nespresso machine would be perfect in that setting as well. The L’OR Lucente Pro is designed from the ground up to be a commercial or professional Nespresso machine that is capable of producing the highest quality coffee with ease and convenience.

The device accepts Nespresso compatible capsules and is fairly easy to use. It also offers a good amount of variety when it comes to coffee from espresso to lungo. I’m including this because not a lot of machines are capable of keeping up with the demand of a small café or office, usually, they need regular maintenance, and cleaning them can be a chore every day. The L’OR Lucente Pro however is a larger machine with a bigger water tank, so you don’t even have to fill it after every hour in an office setting, especially if the office is about testing coffee machines.

I also really like how the L’OR Lucente Pro offers a larger pod bin. You don’t need to empty it a lot which further adds to the convenience. It is a very solidly built machine and is capable of producing a lot of cups of coffee in a day. When you consider the price, the L’OR Lucente Pro will look like a great deal but make sure you place it in one spot because it is a big machine and equally heavy. A little bit of risk care because we heard some customers had a bad machine that broke after one month of usage, I didn’t test the machine out for that long but given that we are ordering them from Amazon I don’t have many concerns. If worse comes to worst, you can easily return it but from what I’ve seen, the machine works perfectly fine.

Reasons to Buy

  • Great for a small café or office
  • Made out of sturdy materials and is heavy
  • Large water tank capacity makes it ideal for multiple drinks

Reasons to Shun

  • Some people had a bad experience with the machine breaking down

Key Features

  • Wattage:  1400 Watts
  • Dimensions:  32.4 x 15.4 x 25.6 cm
  • Material: Stainless Steel and plastic
  • Interface: Buttons
  • Water Tank: 1 Litre

De’Longhi is one of the few companies that makes top-of-the-line coffee makers and the De’Longhi Lattissima One is no different. I was excited to check out the white version of this machine, and I was pleasantly surprised by how beautiful it looked, there is also a brown version which was unavailable at the time when we got it for the review and I bet it looks equally well too. The design of the De’Longhi Lattissima One is kind of similar to the one seen in the De’Longhi Lattissima Touch, and I’m a big fan of both of these machines.

The De’Longhi Lattissima One is made with stainless steel and plastic both of them are of very premium quality. The device comes with an exclusive single-serve system that is presented by the company. The system makes use of an optical sensor and judges the quantity of the milk in the jug and uses it all. This results in minimal wastage and great-tasting coffee. Just like the machine we discussed before, the De’Longhi Lattissima One also has preprogrammed drink options. At the touch of one button, you’ll be able to make cappuccinos and lattes without any hassle. There are backlit buttons, so you can easily choose your drink even when it is dark (and you don’t want to turn on the lights because the cat will wake up).

The device only takes around 25 seconds to heat up, and it is ready to go after that. There is also 19 bar pump pressure available, so you get the best tasting coffee. It is not a compact machine but it more than makes up for that by being a beautiful one. There is a 1 L water tank in there as well as a milk jug that is suitable for single beverages. Both of them are dishwasher safe, so you can easily clean them up.

Reasons to Buy

  • A robust stainless steel body
  • The user interface is simple and easy
  • The single-serve system is really impressive

Reasons to Shun

  • Less milk jug capacity than the competition
  • You’ll still need to do regular maintenance

Key Features

  • Wattage:  1400 Watts
  • Dimensions:  32.4 x 15.4 x 25.6 cm
  • Material: Stainless Steel and plastic
  • Interface: Buttons
  • Water Tank: 1 Litre

I’m a big fan of Sage and always enjoy using their coffee makers and machines, so I was naturally very excited about checking out the Nespresso SNE500BKS Creatista Uno. It was recommended to me by a lot of people and turns out it is one of the best Nespresso machines in the UK. There are a lot of features that I love about the Sage Nespresso SNE500BKS Creatista Uno, but its 3-second warm-up time is the show stealer for me. 3 seconds is nothing when it comes to getting your morning coffee rolling and I really appreciate that it is there.

If you’re a fan of milk texture, then the Nespresso SNE500BKS Creatista Uno is simply going to impressive further. I don’t think any other Nespresso machine comes even close to this one when it comes to great milk texturing. There are automatic milk steaming features, and you can easily adjust the temperature levels and froth. These are the same features that are in the Sage espresso machines as well.

The device also offers a simple user interface that allows you to prepare coffee easily. The Nespresso SNE500BKS Creatista Uno by Sage also follows the design philosophy from their other devices, and it shows. There is even an auto-clean function that purges the steam once after each drink, so the device practically requires very minimal clean-up. The thermojet system inside the Nespresso SNE500BKS Creatista Uno, combined with easy controls, makes it one of the best Nespresso machines around. The only downside is the price which is quite a bit higher than I expected and would possibly be heard by a lot of consumers.

Reasons to Buy

  • A beautiful build with elegant style
  • The user interface is simple and easy
  • Milk frothing features are incredible

Reasons to Shun

  • It can be a bit pricey

Key Features

  • Wattage:  1400 Watts
  • Dimensions:  17 x 32 x 25.8 cm
  • Material: Plastic
  • Interface: Touch Buttons
  • Water Tank: 0.9 Litre

The Nespresso Vertuo Next Xn910B40 by Krups is a modern machine for modern coffee lovers, it comes with a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection to update itself and make the whole experience seamless for you. I like how the machine is priced and especially when I look at the features, the price seems all the more attractive. However, the Nespresso Vertuo Next Xn910B40 by Krups comes with a water tank that you can keep behind the machine or position either on the right or the left if there is not enough depth in your kitchen top.

I also like how the Nespresso Vertuo Next Xn910B40 by Krups has the pods bin on the left side of the machine. This allows you to access it with ease, but if the machines have it on the back, it is always a hassle to reach them. The machine is capable of producing five different cup sizes and that too with a single press of a button. It is also available in many different colours so if you are worried about the design clashing with your current décor, you can at least make it a bit matching.

The company is also giving you three months of coffee when you purchase this machine and activate a coffee subscription. Not a bad deal in my books if you are aiming to use this machine for a longer period of time. The device also accepts four different capsule sizes and is capable of delivering some of the finest roasts available in this form. As it is a Vertuo machine, it uses a patent technology called centrifusion to rotate the capsule and blend ground coffee with water. No matter what the process is, consumers are more concerned about the taste, and I’m glad to say that it tastes phenomenal. If you’re looking to buy a new Vertuo machine, the Nespresso Vertuo Next Xn910B40 by Krups won’t be a disappointment.

Reasons to Buy

  • Simple and easy to use
  • Comes with ample connectivity options
  • Four different pod sizes
  • The water tank can be positioned freely

Reasons to Shun

  • Better recycling options should be provided

Key Features

  • Wattage:  1260 Watts
  • Dimensions:  34.9 x 22 x 32.5 cm
  • Material: Plastic, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene
  • Interface: Buttons
  • Water Tank: 1.7 Litre

The Nespresso Vertuo Plus Special Edition is practically the same machine as the Nespresso Vertuo Next made by Krups. This one however is made by Magimix and has a few different features to make it a special edition. Is it worth the asking price? Well yes, I reckon if you are a fan of the manufacturer (Magimix) and want to have a bit more coffee sizes then it is well worth the price. Don’t worry, it is not going to break the budget, it is only a slight bit higher in price.

Just like with other models, the Nespresso Vertuo Plus Special Edition offers you three months of coffee and aeroccino when you purchase this machine and activate a coffee subscription. There are five different coffee sizes available on the special edition ranging from the large cup of 414 mL to an espresso shot of 40 mL. Overall, these are great sizes that are going to satisfy almost anyone. I like how there is extra clearance for larger cups of this machine because I like to bathe myself in the coffee.

The Nespresso Vertuo Plus Special Edition is also using the patented centrifusion technology that rotates the pod while mixing ground coffee with hot water to give you the perfect brew every time. We got the red model, and we had no complaints about the performance of this Nespresso coffee machine. Overall, if you are dead set on getting a Vertuo machine, and are willing to spend a little bit more than the base model, the Nespresso Vertuo Plus Special Edition is one of the best options.

Reasons to Buy

  • Sleek and stylish looking build
  • Heats up in a short while
  • Ample clearance for larger mugs

Reasons to Shun

  • The gloss finish is prone to getting fingerprints and water stains

FAQs

Which Is the Best Nespresso Machine to Buy?

That depends on your budget and what you need. If you’re asking for my recommendation, I’d say that you go with the Nespresso 11315 Citiz Coffee Machine if you’re looking for a regional espresso machine or with the Nespresso Vertuo Plus Special Edition if you are leading towards a Vertuo machine.

Personally, I would love to have the Nespresso SNE500BKS Creatista Uno at my place, but that’s just the fanboy in me speaking. I like shiny machines.

What Is the Most Popular Nespresso?

The most popular one is the original Nespresso, it is widely available and beloved by people across the world. The newer technology Vertuo machines are also great, but they’re not as widely adopted simply because they are just so new. If you are going with the machine that’s the most popular, the top Nespresso machines are certainly among the best-selling ones around. And if you’re talking about Nespresso pods, the original ones are available in a wide variety of flavours, sizes, and ranges.

Is It Worth Buying a Nespresso Machine?

This, once again, is entirely dependent on what you need. Personally, I have a Nespresso machine along with a regular espresso machine at my place, but I have the luxury of taking machines from the office. However, having an espresso machine at my place is a great advantage especially when I don’t want to make coffee manually or even with a semi-automatic espresso machine. The Nespresso machine is generally quicker and only takes about 3 to 20 seconds to heat up. Considering that the price of a good quality Nespresso machine is significantly lower than a good quality espresso machine, I’d say that they are worth it.
