12 Best Espresso Machines in 2021

Best Espresso Machines UK

Buying an espresso machine is not a small task, you might be searching for the “best espresso machines for the UK” on the good old Internet and still not getting anywhere. The problem with simple Google searches is that they give you results, but you still need to do your own research. This is why we think finding the best espresso machine for you is much more important than finding the best espresso machines for the UK.

Allow me to explain a bit, sure there are a ton of great espresso makers available in the market but not all of them are going to serve you the perfect cup of coffee. I’m not even talking about the bad quality of machines available, I’m simply talking about your personal taste. Someone may like a different kind of coffee and may rate the machine a lot higher on their list, but that machine might not be for you. This is exactly why I think it’s important to make up your mind before purchasing an espresso machine. My goal for this list is not to give you a long list of espresso machines to scroll through but to inform you about different espresso makers so that when you see the perfect one, you are sure that is what you want.

For the sake of tidiness, this article will have a full dedicated section about the types of espresso machines available in the UK and the different methods of their operation right at the start of the article. I highly recommend reading the section if you are new to the espresso world. However, if you’re a veteran coffee maker and drinker, you may want to check out the best machines that make espresso in the UK directly. My goal is to find the best espresso maker for you so you too can enjoy a great cup of espresso whenever you want without having to stand in a long line.

Types of Espresso Machines

There are several types of espresso machines that all have their own advantages and of course, disadvantages. I’ll try to briefly explain what they do so you know which type of machine is going to suit your needs the best.

Manual Espresso Machines – These are the original espresso machines that were introduced in the early 1900s. These are for those who are well into the barista arts and know what they are doing. These machines require a lot of skill and practice however they give you complete control over everything from the espresso shot to the milk frothing. You will need to do everything yourself manually and this can be time-consuming, especially if you are in a hurry to start work in the morning.

Semi-Automatic Espresso Machines – The semi-automatic espresso machines are the bridge between manual and fully automatic espresso machines. These are the most popular kind these days because they allow you to have significant control over the drink you make but also cuts down the manual labour you need to do on a traditional espresso machine. If you are not looking forward to doing everything yourself, a good quality semi-automatic espresso machine is going to be for you. You still need to select how much coffee you put in the filter, tamp the coffee grinds to the perfect pressure, and even decide how much water you want to use.

Super Automatic Espresso Machines – As the name suggests, these one-touch espresso machines are for those who want a more hands-off experience. All you need to do is press a button and the espresso will be delivered to you. You just need to choose the coffee strength and the milk frothing and the rest will be done by the machine itself. Most of these machines come with pre-programmed preferences and are mostly of great quality. Of course, they won’t measure up to semi-automatic or fully manual espresso machines, but they will be a lot faster than those. Some of these machines provide great quality without sacrificing the taste too much.

Subtypes of Espresso Makers

Pod Espresso Machines – These are highly convenient espresso machines that use a pod. The coffee they produce is not as good as other espresso makers so only use these if you really value convenience over anything else.

Portable Espresso Makers – These are the compact and highly portable espresso makers which can fit in smaller kitchens or can be taken on the move. If you really like camping and want to have good quality coffee, these are for you.

Stovetop Espresso Makers – The stovetop coffee makers are also called Moka Pots and are small devices that can be used on a stove. They are not exactly espresso makers because there is no pressure available.

Commercial Espresso Makers – These are designed to be used in coffee shops, and you’ll find them bulky and heavy for home usage. They are very expensive and are designed to handle large volumes of espresso making.

We are going to cover each and every type of espresso maker in the future but for this article, we will be focusing on a good mix with everything included. These are the devices that you can use at home without needing any kind of exceptional brewing skills.

The Sage Barista Pro is one of the best home espresso machines for the UK not only because of its beautiful design but also because of its functionality. This is a semi-automatic machine that has some compelling features that allow you to feel like a true professional barista. One of the biggest reasons why you should get the Sage Barista Pro is its unique ThermoJet heating system. This heating system takes around 3 seconds to heat up. This is the same technology that is used for instantaneous change from brewing to steaming and is amazing for those who don’t like to wait for their morning coffee.

While the Sage SES878BTR Barista Pro is a bit on the expensive side, the design and the materials used are of premium quality. The stainless steel build along with choice plastics gives off a beautiful look. Speaking of the design, I really like the front-facing LCD screen. I was not sure about it at first, but Sage has made great usage of it when it comes to providing precise information. There are also cute animations that play out during the grinding and extracting processes, which further adds to the personality of the machine.

Just like with all other premium quality espresso makers, this one also comes with an integrated conical burr grinder. The grinder activates on a single touch and thanks to the dosage control feature, delivers the exact amount of coffee that is needed. There are several adjustable grind sizes available, I usually go for the finest ones because they extract the most flavour out of the coffee bean. However, I highly recommend that you experiment with it to find the perfect balance for yourself. The machine is capable of delivering 19 to 22 g of consistent and balanced espresso.

I became a fan of sage after testing out the Sage Oracle Espresso Machine and had high expectations of the Sage SES878BTR Barista Pro. Both of these machines share a lot of similarities and are capable of producing some great quality coffee without the need for a lot of input from you. The machine also has precise espresso extraction thanks to digital temperature control. The temperature control is capable of delivering water at a precise temperature which results in good quality espresso extraction. Overall, the Sage Barista Pro is a top-of-the-line and possibly the best espresso machine for the UK and will serve you well for a long time. The only hindrance is its almost prohibitive price which can definitely sway your decision. However, if you do have the means, this espresso machine will absolutely not disappoint you in any regard.

Reasons to Buy

  • A perfectly balanced taste
  • Capable of extracting rich flavour
  • Top-of-the-line intuitive LCD interface
  • Blazing-fast heat uptime
  • The integrated conical burr grinder

Reasons to shun

  • High price point
  • Takes up a lot of space

Sometimes you just want a cup of espresso at the press of a button and for those times the De’Longhi Magnifica S is one of the best choices available. It is a super-automatic machine that takes the whole process of coffee making and makes it automatic. This means you don’t need to worry about grinding, tamping, dozing, making, pouring because the espresso maker is going to take care of all of that. The De’Longhi Magnifica S is a machine for those who simply want a good cup of coffee without working a lot for it.

The De’Longhi Magnifica S is also one of the best-looking super-automatic espresso makers around. I was really impressed with the dimensions and the look of the device, the black colour further accentuated its looks. While it is indeed made out of plastic, it is a high-quality one, so it won’t look out of place in your kitchen. There is also a soft touch control panel that allows you to interact with the machine with ease, there are several preprogrammed operations available for you to choose from as well.

The machine doesn’t do everything itself though, you’ll still need to use the milk frother if you want cappuccinos or lattes. Thankfully, the steam wand on the machine is very well designed, it is a fully manual wand, so it might take some time for you to master, but it is easy to use. This allows you a lot more control over the texture of the milk and really make the drink your own. That’s about all you need to do on this machine, even the milk system cleans itself automatically after each usage, so you don’t even have to worry about cleaning.

What’s the one great thing I love about the De’Longhi Magnifica S? The built in grinder. While the grinder is not as versatile as some grinders found on other machines, it is one of the most silent ones. There are 13 different settings that can be used with coffee beans or preground coffee. But the grinder remains very quiet when compared with other coffee makers. Is it completely silent? No, it is absolutely not, but it is not going to wake up the whole forest either. I would’ve liked a bit more levels of grinding but 13 work well too. I highly recommend the De’Longhi Magnifica S to those who are looking for an automatic espresso maker that takes care of most of the stuff for them and also provides a delicious cup of coffee. This espresso maker provides one of the best values for money as well.

Reasons to buy

  • Elegant looking design
  • The grinder is silent
  • Make 2 cups simultaneously
  • Good quality cleaning features

Reasons to Shun

  • Only 13 grinder settings
  • Plastic build is not as sturdy as steel

Specifications

  • Wattage: 1100 Watts
  • Milk Frother: Yes
  • Pressure: 15 Bar
  • Water Tank: 1.2 Litres

Not only is the Swan Retro Pump Espresso Machine a great budget espresso machine but also one of the best looking ones around. The machine has a strikingly beautiful and retro design and also comes with a very affordable price point. Of course, being a budget machine has its shortcomings and the Swan Retro Pump Espresso Machine is not any different. There are certain features that are missing on this machine, but that is to be expected from a budget espresso maker. The fact that it looks this cool makes it one of the best choices for those looking to have a colourful kitchen. The device is also available in several funky colours, so you will be not out of choice on this one.

Swan is a purely British company so if you want to support your local makers, the Swan Retro Pump Espresso Machine is the best way to go. They used to make those heating elements that could be submerged in water almost a century ago. So the company has some experience behind making stuff go hot, the Swan Retro Pump Espresso Machine is a testament to their design and quality.

The Swan retro pump espresso maker comes with a high-performance 15 bars of pressure. It also has a self-priming feature that allows it to be always ready to make your drink in a matter of minutes. Despite its smaller size, the machine still houses a generous 1.2 L  tank. The tank is also detachable, so you can easily fill it up whenever you need. The interface is kept simple with several buttons and dials on the front, but it is decisively retro with its analogue gauge. The device also accepts Easy Serve Espresso Pods as well as ground coffee. As for frothing, there is a manual steam wand that produces some good quality milk froth. Overall, the Swan Retro Pump Espresso Machine is worth it on the basis of its looks alone, but it is thankfully also capable of making some good-tasting coffee really fast.

Reasons to Buy

  • Stunningly beautiful design
  • Can work with coffee pods and ground coffee
  • Has a manual steam wand
  • Compact in size as well as in price

Reasons to Shun

  • Doesn’t come with a bean grinder
  • The machine is light, so support is needed when twisting the holder

Specifications

  • Wattage: 1350 Watts
  • Milk Frother: Yes
  • Pressure: 15 Bar
  • Water Tank: 1 Litre

De’Longhi has a great reputation when it comes to espresso makers and home espresso machines and the De’Longhi Dedica EC686M Espresso Machine doesn’t seem to be deviating from that. It is a well-loved espresso machine that has hundreds of Amazon reviews singing praises of. So naturally, I was also very keen on trying it out to see what all the fuss was about. One thing I’d like to clear here is that the machine itself is amazing, and I would highly recommend it if you can afford it however, I’d suggest that you wait for a good deal or a sale on this one. It is a tad bit pricey, this is my personal take which is very subjective.

Now speaking of the machine itself, it is a slim espresso maker which won’t take a lot of space in your kitchen. Coming at just 15 cm wide, it also looks very sleek and stylish. As it is a slim espresso maker, it also comes with a slim 1 L water tank which will be enough for a few drinks. While we are on the topic of slim, the 51 mm portafilter is also a bit slimmer than the 58 mm standard ones we are used to. The device comes with a Pannarello steam wand that is quite useful in frothing milk for your drinks. I’d recommend removing it to make it a standard steam wand for a bit more control over your drinks.

The De’Longhi Dedica EC686M Espresso Machine comes with a standard 15 bar pressure that is more than enough to extract a rich aroma from your coffee beans. There is some customization potential on this espresso machine, so you’ll be able to control pretty much every aspect of your coffee-making process. Changing coffee strength to the temperature is quite easy on this espresso machine. But what I really like is the descaling system that allows you to clean the machine without much effort. You will still need to combine it with a good quality burr grinder, never get a blade-based grinder as it will only chop the beans and not grind them.

Reasons to Buy

  • Sleek and slim profile
  • The steam wand is customizable
  • Made out of quality materials
  • Button-based interface

Reasons to shun

  • Only 1 L tank
  • Does not come with a grinder

Specifications

  • Wattage: 1400 Watts
  • Milk Frother: Yes
  • Pressure: 15 Bar
  • Water Tank: 1.5 Litres

If you’re in the market for a good quality almost fully automatic espresso machine, then the Gaggia RI8263/01 Velasca Prestige is one of the best espresso machines out there. There are a ton of customization options available on this, and after you’re done with the tinkering, you’ll always get the perfect cup of drink for you. The Gaggia RI8263/01 Velasca Prestige is also a full bean-to-cup espresso machine that comes with highly sought-after features including a great quality ceramic burr grinder.

This Gaggia classic espresso machine also has 6 preprogrammed drinks that you can choose from. The list includes cappuccino, lungo, and of course espresso. You also have the option of changing the strength of the coffee, the volume, the temperature, and even the milk volume to ensure you get the cup of espresso you want. As I am a very lazy guy, I really appreciate that the machine automatically discards used grounds into a waste bin, the bin is spacious enough to hold grounds worth 10 drinks, so you don’t even have to clean it off.

Speaking of milk, it is frothed using a milk Carafe. You can easily store it in the fridge when you’re not using it as well. The milk system is easy enough to clean thanks to the button that runs steamy hot water through the whole system. The machine also comes with some great user experience features including alerts when the water reservoir is getting low, or when the bean hopper needs to be refilled. The machine even alerted me when the waste bin was full so overall, I didn’t have to worry about either the cleaning or the quality of the drinks.

The Gaggia RI8263/01 Velasca Prestige is the coffee maker for you if you are interested in getting a lot of customization, good quality alerts, and of course some great quality espresso. The only shortcoming I noticed is that the frequency of cleaning required by the machine, it is recommended that you clean it every week. Even though the process is straightforward enough, it can still be a bit of a hassle to do regularly. Of course, we would all take an espresso machine that runs reliably for years even if it requires regular cleaning.

Reasons to Buy

  • Some good quality drink customization
  • Comes with a ceramic burr grinder
  • 6 pre-programmed drinks
  • Made with premium quality metal and plastics

Reasons to Shun

  • Requires consistent cleaning
  • Can run a bit pricey

Specifications

  • Wattage: 1600 Watts
  • Milk Frother: Yes
  • Pressure: 15 Bar
  • Water Tank: 1.9 Litres

Sage makes some of the best coffee machines around, and I have become a huge fan of their machines. Honestly, I could easily make a whole list with Sage espresso machines, but I don’t want to look like a corporate sellout. You might be thinking, “That’s what a sellout would say” and yeah I’d be thinking the same as well, I have no defense for this but just read about the Sage SES500BSS Bambino Plus and tell me if I’m wrong.

The Sage SES500BSS Bambino Plus is an affordable home espresso machine that delivers some great quality coffee. The device is almost instantaneously ready thanks to its Thermojet heating system that is ready to brew in only 3 seconds. As it is a super-automatic and easy to use espresso machine, you don’t even have to worry about anything. Just press the button and let the machine do the magic for you. The thing that will either make you buy it immediately or concern you is the steam wand. The wand is also fully automatic and allows you to program your temperature and texture, the rest is taken care of by the Sage SES500BSS Bambino Plus. It can be a huge plus for someone who just wants their espresso without minimal input but at the same time can be a negative for those who want a bit of customization when it comes to milk frothing.

The pump inside the Sage SES500BSS Bambino Plus is the standard 15 bar pressure one. This is to be expected from a good quality espresso machine, anything under 15 bars of pressure is not going to make you good quality coffee. However, the Sage Bambino Plus goes a step further and has automatic low-pressure pre-infusion. This feature allows it to gradually increase pressure and extract the most flavours out of the coffee beans. Speaking of perfect espresso extraction, the Digital Temperature Control also ensures that the water temperature is perfect as well.

Reasons to Buy

  • Compact and stylish design
  • Made with good quality materials
  • Provides great value for money
  • Fully automatic and easy to use

Reasons to Shun

  • Doesn’t come with a grinder
  • Automatic milk frothing might not be for everyone

Specifications

  • Wattage: 1350 Watts
  • Milk Frother: Yes
  • Pressure: 15 Bar
  • Water Tank: 1 Litre

The Smeg ECF01RDUK Pump Espresso Machine comes in 7 different colours and the pink one seems to be always out of stock. I have no idea why that is, and I’m a bit sad that we couldn’t get the pink one in the office. Thankfully, they had the brilliant red glossy one available, and I got to test it for a little while. Does it get fingerprints and smudges? Absolutely. Does it look gorgeous when cleaned? 100% and I highly recommend that you get the red version if you’re interested. The traditionally styled home espresso machine is built with stainless steel and good quality plastics. It is also among the slimmest espresso makers on the list and won’t take up a lot of space on your countertop. The machine also comes with a flow stop function that allows you to change the coffee length with ease.

The traditional pump espresso maker has 15 bar pressure which is needed to make perfect espressos. The 1950s style uses either already ground coffee or paper pods to make you a good cup of coffee with minimal effort. All you need to do is fill the portafilter with the coffee of your choice and let the machine do its magic. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the aromatic espresso the machine produced, it even had a delectable layer of crema on top.

I was impressed by the functioning of the machine especially how quickly it is to heat up. Out of the box, the machine comes preassembled, and you don’t need to do anything except flush it thoroughly before usage. On the right side, you’ll also find a traditional steam wand, it works perfectly fine, and I didn’t find any problems using it. At the touch of a button, you’ll be able to choose one cup, 2 cups, or steam options. There is also a dedicated light for descaling and a water level indicator. Overall, the Smeg ECF01RDUK Pump Espresso Machine provides a good quality experience to the users all the while making surprisingly tasty coffee. The product also comes with 2 years of guarantee but for that, you need to register your device on the official website, this is free though, and I highly recommend that you do it.

Reasons to Buy

  • A gloriously 50s style aesthetic
  • Doesn’t take a lot of space
  • Thermoblock heating rapidly heats up the device

Reasons to Shun

  • The plastic look might not be for everyone
  • Is a fingerprint magnet

Specifications

  • Wattage: 1850 Watts
  • Milk Frother: Yes
  • Pressure: 15 Bar
  • Water Tank: 2 Litres

The Sage BES87UK Barista Express is an espresso machine for serious coffee drinkers and the price reflects that as well. There are 2 versions of the Barista Express, one is the standard one that we are reviewing here and the other one is the Pro version. There are slight differences between the 2 but if you are going to use the machine in your home, we recommend that you go for the simple version. The standard version of the Sage BES87UK Barista Express is not only less expensive than the Pro one, but you can easily get a deal on it as it’s been around for a couple of years. However, if you really value 30 grind settings over the 18 ones you get with the standard version, you can easily get the Pro Barista Express as well.

The Sage BES87UK Barista Express is a well-made espresso machine and is regularly considered one of the best bean-to-cup coffee machines. This is partially because it includes a good quality integrated grinder, and it also has a stainless steel sturdy build. There is also an inbuilt grinder that takes only a minute to go from beans to espresso. The 18 different grinding settings are more than what others offer but still not as good as a dedicated bean grinder. Of course, at this price point, I would’ve loved to have a bit more versatility when it comes to grinding however, the finest setting on this machine is enough to extract great flavour out of your coffee beans.

This is a semi-automatic machine, so it takes care of a lot of stuff for you especially dosing. On a single touch, the machine delivers the perfect volume of ground coffee and remains consistent throughout usage. The Sage also offers low-pressure pre-infusion which soaks the coffee before the actual high-pressure extraction begins, this gives the coffee a balanced flavour. Speaking of the steam wand, it is a high-pressure one that is quite capable of producing quality milk texture. I also like that the company gives you 2 years of repair, replace or refund guarantee which at this price point is almost a necessity.

This is a great alternative to the Sage Barista Pro, especially when you consider the price difference. The coffee tastes exactly the same and apart from the grinder and the screen, almost everything is the same.

Reasons to buy

  • The good quality grinder
  • Made with stainless steel material
  • Offers hands-free dosing
  • Produces some great quality coffee

Reasons to shun

  • Only 18 grind settings

Specifications

  • Wattage: 1500 Watts
  • Milk Frother: No
  • Pressure: 15 Bar
  • Water Tank: 1.1 Litres

If you’re like me, you’d want instant coffee without doing a lot. In a perfect world, you’d get a good cup of coffee materialized in front of you, but this isn’t a perfect world. However, the Nespresso Vertuo Next takes away most of the work you have to do in order to get a good espresso, and it does that by using coffee capsules. Yes, it is a capsule-based espresso machine and while these are not the best espresso machines out there, they are certainly the most convenient ones.

The Nespresso Vertuo Next has 5 different cup sizes ranging from 414 mL to 40 mL. Some days you just want a giant mug while other days you’re just craving a double espresso of 80 mL. The machine comes with a Centrifusion extraction technology which is a patented technology by Nespresso. It basically spins the capsule up to 4000 times a minute and mixes ground coffee with water. This results in a well-blended coffee with perfect cream. I like the convenience of simply inserting a capsule and getting a drink out of the machine, the Nespresso Vertuo Next also has automatic blend recognition, so you don’t even have to press any button to select what you need. There is a small bar code on the side of the capsule that the machine can easily recognize and adjust brewing parameters on the fly.

The convenience that comes with the Nespresso Vertuo Next is unrivalled. All you need to do is press a button, and you will get a respectably good cup of coffee with minimal effort. The Nespresso Vertuo Next also comes with a welcome package that includes a wide variety of Nespresso Vertuo capsules. This means that you will be able to experiment and choose the flavours you like the most. The company also uses hermetically sealed and recyclable capsules that are made out of aluminium. This not only captures and retains freshness but also is capable of giving good flavour. Overall, if you value convenience over everything else including customization and a bit of extra flavouring, then the Nespresso Vertuo Next is made for you.

Reasons to buy

  • Superbly convenient to use
  • Get coffee with a touch of a button
  • Comes with an adjustable cupholder
  • Automatically turns off after 2 minutes of inactivity

Reasons to shun

  • Can only use Nespresso Vertuo capsules
  • Virtually zero customization options

Specifications

  • Wattage: 1450 Watts

It is no secret that I’m a big fan of De’Longhi and their coffee machines, so I was very excited about getting the De’Longhi Primadonna S Evo in the office. And just like always, the espresso machine from De’Longhi did not disappoint. Sure there are some shortcomings, but they are not that big of a deal especially when you’re getting a good quality coffee cup with not a lot of effort. The first thing you’ll notice about the De’Longhi Primadonna S Evo is its beautifully sleek design. It is a modern look and the stainless steel body further accentuates the modern design.

The unique thing the De’Longhi Primadonna S Evo does is not on the machine itself, it’s on your smartphone. There is a companion app called the Coffee Link app, it allows you to discover new customization and personalization options. It even gives you helpful suggestions to further enhance your coffee preparation experience and allows you to discover new methods and flavours. Another great feature of this espresso machine is the ability to add users. Yes, you can have up to 6 people with their own profiles saved on the machine. This means after your significant other is done you don’t have to fiddle with the machine at all, just select your profile and the De’Longhi Primadonna S Evo will know what kind of coffee you like.

The De’Longhi Primadonna S Evo also offers personalization options for each beverage. You can easily adjust the coffee quantity, aroma, and milk quantity. This means that you get to choose what you want whenever you want. The interface is also very well designed and allows you to control the machine with a clear graphic display and touch buttons. The Carafe comes with dedicated functions to clean the machine. The De’Longhi Primadonna S Evo is smart enough to clean all the parts that come into contact with milk, with hot water and steam. Overall, the De’Longhi espresso machine is a pleasure to use and can be the perfect match for your home or office setup.

Reasons to Buy

  • The coffee Link app is actually great
  • You can have up to 6 different users
  • Healthy amount of personalization options
  • Very easy to clean and maintain

Reasons to shun

  • The milk temperature is not customizable
  • The stainless steel is prone to scratches

Specifications

  • Wattage: 1400 Watts
  • Milk Frother: No
  • Pressure: 15 Bar
  • Water Tank: 1.2 Litres

The first thing you’ll notice about the Melitta E950-103 Coffee Machine is its symmetrical and almost monolithic design. The machine is made out of stainless steel and plastic and has a unique look to it. It can fit perfectly in a modern home and not look out of place. It comes in 4 different colours and while I wanted the red one, we were able to secure the silver one. The colour doesn’t matter when it comes to making coffee, but it sure adds to the experience.

The Melitta E950-103 Coffee Machine has a lot of threes. There is an integrated steel grinder with 3 settings, there are 3 brewing temperatures, and there are even 3 coffee strands available for you to choose from. I wouldn’t be surprised if this costs £333 (thankfully it’s a bit lower than that). There is a height-adjustable sprout on the machine as well with a convenient 2 cup option. The machine also features a good-quality cup warmer that will surely come in handy on extra chilly nights.

What I really like is the easily removable water tank, this adds another layer of convenience to the already easy-to-use machine. You can also easily clean it by pressing one button and the rest of the machine can also be wiped clean. The Melitta E950-103 Coffee Machine features energy-efficient LED lights as well as automatic shutdown modes, this allows you to save energy in the long run. In the box, you get an espresso machine, filter cartridge, water hardness test strip, and one bottle of descalant. The water hardness test strip is a great way to determine what kind of water you get from your tap. I highly recommend always using the filter anyway because filtered water makes the best coffee.

Reasons to buy

  • Strikingly beautiful design
  • Easily removable water tank
  • Multiple coffee strengths and brew temperatures
  • Makes 2 cups at the same time

Reasons to Shun

  • Features a steel grinder
  • The companion app can be a bit finicky

Specifications

  • Wattage: N/A
  • Milk Frother: No
  • Pressure: N/A
  • Water Tank: 0.07 Litres

Need coffee on the go? Or maybe you’re planning a camping trip but can’t live without your espresso like me? Then the Wacaco Minipresso GR is the machine made for you. Calling it a machine is a bit of a stretch, but it does feature some mechanical parts. You don’t even need any battery or electricity to make this espresso machine work. I’ll be honest here, the coffee out if it is not actually espresso because to make true espresso, you need 15 bars of pressure. The coffee tastes okay and is better than no coffee, that’s all I have to say about the taste here. I understand that I may sound like a coffee snob, but this is passable coffee on the go.

Once you’ve come to terms with basically abandoning high-quality taste, the Wacaco Minipresso GR is actually a pretty nifty device. It is a manually operated “espresso” machine that is not only lightweight but also compact. It can be used with a variety of different beans and roasts, so you’ll always get something you’d like. All you need to do is add boiling water and enjoy 50 mL of espresso anywhere you want, including the office.

The Wacaco Minipresso GR is simple to operate as well. All you do is add coffee to the filter basket, level it up with slight pressure, and add hot water to the water tank. Now unlock the piston and pump a couple of times to extract espresso. Overall, I’d recommend this to people who travel a lot and don’t have access to coffee shops or when you want to go off-grid on a camping trip.

Reasons to buy

  • Very portable and easy to carry
  • Doesn’t need any electricity or batteries
  • Operated manually

reasons to shun

  • The taste isn’t exactly stellar
